  11. This utility is used to fix problems in OYC data files caused 
  12. by damaged files.  In most cases files are damaged by errors
  13. introduced by fragmented or cross-linked files on a hard disk.
  14. The best protection is to regularly backup up your catalog files
  15. and to defragmet your hard disk on a regular basis.
  16.  
  17. DISCLAIMER: This utility was developed for internal use by
  18. HomeCraft in creating catalogs of pre-entered information.
  19. There is no warranty and we do not provide technical support
  20. for this utility.  It is provided only because some people
  21. may find it helpful.  Solving a damaged file problem can
  22. be very difficult.  This utility provides some tools that will
  23. help discover the cause of a problem and even solve some problems.
  24. It is not within the scope of this documentation or utility
  25. to provide a complete troubleshooting guide.

  27. This utility may be used with OYC catalog files created by any
  28. of the following software:
  29.  
  30.         ORGANIZE! Your Collection (DOS Version)
  31.         ORGANIZE! Your Collection (Windows Version)
  32.         ORGANIZE! Your Collection (Windows Multimedia Version)
  33.         ORGANIZE! Your... (all shareware versions)
  34.         ORGANIZE! Your... (all lite versions)

  37. The FILEINFO.EXE file must be copied to the same drive and directory
  38. where the OYC.EXE file is located.  It will not work if placed in
  39. any other directory.
  40.  
  41. To use this utility go to the DOS prompt for the directory
  42. containing the OYC.EXE file, type FILEINFO, and push ENTER.  This
  43. utility may be run in Windows by using the "RUN" option on the
  44. files menu.
  45.  
  46. When the utility starts you will be prompted to enter the name of
  47. the catalog you want the utility to work on.  If the catalog is
  48. on another drive or in another directory, you can also enter the
  49. drive and path.  (Do not enter a filename extension, only enter
  50. the name of the catalog).

  52. The next screen shows a list of the lines (fields) in the
  53. specified catalog.  The length of each line is also shown.  If
  54. there is a problem with the file that results in the software not
  55. being able to read the file, and error code will be displayed.
  56. You'll then be able to use any of the three availabled "fix" utilities.

  58. Below the list of filenames is an important set of information.  It
  59. shows the total number of entries, the calculated record size, and
  60. the record size that is set in the catalog.  The calculated and set
  61. record sizes should be the same.

  63. You can check/view individual entries by typing in an entry number
  64. and pushing ENTER.

  66. You can use the "fix" utilities by typing the letter "F" and pushing
  67. enter.
  68.  
  69. There are three "fix" utilities:
  70.  
  71. Use these utilities with caution.  They can damage a good catalog.
  72. Be sure you have a backup copy of the catalog you are working on.
  73. You may need to try several things, and recover the original
  74. catalog after each attempt at repairing the file.

  76. 1) Set number of entries.  This feature allows you to set the number
  77. of entries in a catalog.  It might be used, for example, if the
  78. middle section of a catalog is damaged and OYC is only reading half the
  79. catalog.  Setting the total number of entries to a higher number
  80. might allow OYC to have access to the entries in the second half
  81. of the catalog.

  83. 2) Set field lengths.  This feature allows you to set the length of
  84. each line in an OYC catalog.
  85.  
  86. 3) Set flags.  Each entry in an OYC catalog has a "flag" attached that
  87. identifies it as a valid entry, or a deleted entry.  If the flags are
  88. not correct OYC may show entries as having "NO INFORMATION ENTERED".
  89. This utility goes through the entire catalog and sets all the flags
  90. to the "good" setting.
